Why algae?
Algae grow ten times faster than standard plants. They only require water, carbon dioxide (CO2)
and sunlight to flourish. Algae biomass
cultivation confers four important potential benefits that other sources do not
have. First, algae biomass can be
produced at extremely high volumes, and this biomass can yield a much higher
percentage of oil than other sources. Second,
algal oil has limited market competition.
Third, algae can be cultivated on marginal land, fresh water, sea water
and even waste water. Fourth,
innovations in algae production allow it to become more productive while
consuming resources that would otherwise be considered waste.
